Grandparent Tech: Start talking
COMMON GROUND. That is not always easy to find between three generations. Add to that the opinions about technology and it’s place in our daily lives and you will hear the crickets chirping at family gatherings. Now I know most of you Grandparent types are younger looking and healthier than ever. I thought I’d give you a cheat sheet for conversation starters that just might challenge your grandchild to explain why they enjoy technology…or at least have a laugh about why something is in the news. I have the suspicion that it will be an enjoyable talk. Here are your crib notes for the weekend:
- Steve Jobs on temporary medical leave at Apple - Do you think this will change the way Apple products are designed? Will Apple lose some of it’s superiority in the technological market?
- Did you see the new announcement about Nintendo’s 3DS? I heard it is coming out in mid-March. What is the benefit of having 3D visuals while gaming? I heard you don’t have to wear special glasses to enjoy it. Would you like to go with me to get our hands on it when it hits the stores? You want me to buy it? Too funny, start saving your money!
- You should avoid fountains while texting! Did you see the video? What do you think about the security guards sharing it on the internet without her permission? Should they have helped her out?
- Have you heard of Doodle4Google? I took a look at all of the logo headers used through the years at Google and think you could design one to fit this year’s theme. The prizes are pretty awesome by-the-way.
- What’s your favorite book series right now? Of all time? Did you know there are cookbooks out for the Red Wall Series and the Harry Potter Series?
That should be enough to get you started. I’ll warn you…say something negative about how ‘kids these days’ are wasting so much time on computers (or phones, or facebook, or anything else) and those grandchildren will shut like a clam. Knowing you will listen to their ideas about technology or trends will mean the world to them.
Now go be the hip grandparents I know you can.
