BECAUSE I GREW UP IN A SMALL TOWN, I AM STILL IN TOUCH WITH MANY OF MY CLOSEST CHILDHOOD FRIENDS. Eddie is one of those friends. We went to church and school together and we’ve basically known each other since forever. On Sunday I heard the news that Eddie had been in a car wreck. He was traveling to research some genealogy facts for his family. I am still piecing together the details, but to my best knowledge it appears that he was hit on the driver’s side door by the other car. He was airflighted to Birmingham’s UAB hospital and has been recovering from broken ribs, a punctured lung, and other injuries. Needless to say, we all feel fortunate that he is still alive after a wreck like that.

Our kids are pretty attached to Mr. Eddie. They think it’s cool that he is a songwriter and they like to talk to him. He visited at Halloween two years ago and now my three think he is supposed to be here each Halloween. His current band is called The Wildwood Ruminators and they have a cool folksy, blues, acoustic sound.

On Monday I found this note in my work notes by Grace:

It says in 7 year old spelling and language:
“Dear Mr. Eddie,
You have been in my pray[er]s sense Sunday. I hope you can replace your ribcage and get to feeling better soon. I hope you can get to brething better.
Love, Grace”

The latest reports have Eddie up walking and beginning to heal, but not yet released from the hospital. I think the ribcage replacement surgery must have worked. Get well soon my dear friend!
