What’s in Your Hotdog? #applegate
SOME DAYS REQUIRE A SIMPLE MEAL. FAST AND SIMPLE. Saturdays are the days when this urgency is put to the test. I have to admit that the lure of fast food often seems like the only quick solution when we are headed out the door to make our various commitments. A few Saturdays ago we actually had an easy schedule and were able to enjoy the day together. We had only one appointment in the afternoon. That’s a relaxed Saturday for us!
After a big breakfast (a.k.a. – not a poptart or banana thrown in midair towards the car) we went about our tasks together. I was busy sorting the last of the school year papers when my crew began discussing what they wanted for lunch. My thoughts? Already? But yes, they were hungry. For once I had a plan — we were eating hot dogs for lunch. I had recently purchased Applegate’s “The Super Natural Uncured Beef Hotdog”. One look at their ingredient list convinced me that this might be the perfect simple meal:
Beef (And not just any beef…Applegate goes to the trouble to list their methodology on using real food which has been minimally processed, fed well, with no additives.)
Water
Spices
And that’s it. Period.
I have an issue with too many ingredients. I’ve been trying to cook mostly whole foods for my family. I’m not perfect, but I absolutely cringe when I read the ingredient list of most hotdogs. My kids love hotdogs, but I hate to feed them junk. Honestly, I hate to feed myself junk.
Have you heard that old saying?
“Garbage In = Garbage Out”
Well, it’s true.
Those hotdogs were proclaimed to be “Awesome” and “So good” by everyone rushing through my kitchen. I laid out a variety of fixings and let each person make whatever version made them happy. That made me happy. Fast and simple can actually be ‘the real deal’ food.
A friend asked if I would recommend them…yes, absolutely!
